Not that long ago, a friend of mine was getting nervous before her first teleseminar of her new message. 30 minutes before she logged in to deliver her content, I had her call me. I took her through a series of my vocal warm-ups from my college days as a vocal performance and choral conducting student.

We breathed, we sighed, we sang specifically chosen exercises that are designed to gently and healthily wake you up into your body. These exercises do not require that you have ANY previous singing experience.

In this time together, her body relaxed, her tone of voice warmed up, and she left with an exponential increase in her confidence. The teleseminar went off well.

I smiled, and I left happy, high on music. I love doing this. I’ve been guiding new and experienced musicians for years, but never consciously made a connection to business or heart-centered entrepreneurs until then….

It was then that I realized something…

I had ALWAYS been using these key vocal warm-ups as a subconscious part of my own pre-business meeting routine. Over the course of my life, people had acknowledged my ability to articulate and communicate difficult messages…but I had taken my relationship to music and my voice for granted.

What I came to realize is that my own ability to communicate powerfully and articulate difficult messages is inextricably tied to making music before delivering my message.

Before any client, before important business meetings, and before any engagement where I needed to be absolutely, one hundred percent present and on my game, I simply whipped out a series of vocal exercises that I had been using all throughout my singing years. I just tune it out of my own experience because it’s just a part of me….

This practice was simply ingrained in me as a normal part of opening up the voice and tending it in a healthy way so that the most beautiful, resonant sound could flow through, minding important tips for never hurting myself.

Within the week, another friend of mine called me out of the blue and said, “Heather, the other day I was on my way to teach my new reflexology class and I was so nervous, I wished you were in the car with me doing warm-ups with me…I just don’t know how to use my voice.
